Modestman Brewing has consolidated its operations from New Hampshire to South Portland after recently buying a Park Avenue production facility from Definitive Brewing Company.

Modestman owner Ash Sheehan said his company bought the facility, at 35 Park Ave., last month from Definitive, which had bought it from Fore River Brewing Company after it closed in 2023. That same year, Modestman bought Fore River’s taproom at 45 Huntress Ave.

Modestman launched in 2019 in Keene, New Hampshire. Sheehan, who lives with his wife on Peaks Island, said the company closed its Keene taproom last week. He expects all of Modestman’s production to take place in South Portland by September.

“The New Hampshire taproom was downtown in a college town, and wasn’t really set up for scale,” Sheehan explained. “We’ve had a lot of demand for our beer, so we’ve been not fulfilling demand and not efficient. So this move is to grow in an efficient manner.”

Sheehan estimated that Modestman will be able to triple its production using the South Portland facility. The brewery currently makes about 4,000 barrels annually.

Modestman sells its products in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, with periodic distribution in other parts of the country. Sheehan said the company will be hiring to fill six full-time positions at the South Portland production facility.

“Over our two years in Maine, we’ve had a lot of great reception about the quality of our beer,” Sheehan said. “So the goal is to really grow the Maine market, and keep satisfying the markets we’re already in.”
