A Jefferson couple aims to open a shop selling coffee, tea and coffee-brewing equipment in Brunswick this spring.

Heidi Townsend said she and her husband, Chris, expect to launch Tern Coffee and Tea in early May at 140A Maine St., formerly home to Vinylhaven.

The Townsends have been running Tern Coffee Roasters since 2023 out of their home in Jefferson. Chris Townsend also operates Coastal Coffee Tech, a repair service for coffee equipment and roasting machines.

“We really wanted a location where we could showcase the line of espresso machines we carry,” Heidi Townsend said.

The store features a line of roasted coffee, loose leaf and tinned teas, a pared-back menu of coffee and espresso drinks to go, as well as retail espresso machines, coffee equipment and barista ware. Townsend said she’s developing her own herbal tea blends, and expects the store will host weekend coffee tastings and workshops.

Tern Coffee and Tea will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Townsends previously worked in Maine for Wicked Joe Organic Coffee. Townsend said her husband has been roasting coffee for 16 years and has also worked at roasters in Oregon and Massachusetts.

Tern will source some of its featured beans from Mexico and El Salvador. “We’re really excited to support the farmers of our coffees and teas and share them with Maine,” Townsend said.
