ELBERTA, Ala. – Lawrance “Larry” M. LaPointe, 75, passed away on Jan. 30, 2025. Born in Rumford, on July 30, 1949, to Lionel and Amba LaPointe, Larry grew up living at various points around New England alongside his nine siblings, but he always called Maine home.
A proud veteran and patriot, Larry served in the Infantry during the Vietnam War before coming home to marry Charlene Rose Foshay. Together they raised their two children in Pensacola, Fla., where they spent a decade. Never content to sit still, Larry used any excuse to spend time outdoors or to work in his woodshop. He especially loved warm weather and salt water fishing – and most especially, together.
At the end of the 1980s, Larry resettled in the Portland area and he dedicated 25 years to the Cumberland County Corrections Department, where he retired as a lieutenant. For nearly 30 years, Larry made his home in Gray where he had an enviable workshop and an impressive garden every summer. Finally having his fill of Maine winters, he relocated to Alabama shortly before his death with his beloved springer spaniel and best friend, Gil.
He leaves behind a legacy of industry, passion for hard work and love of the outdoors. His unwavering support for friends and family, energy and sense of humor will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Larry is survived by his two children, Lawrence LaPointe and Nadia LaPointe-Cothran; and six grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
