As a former lawyer in Maine (now happily living in the South), I have watched in horror as the state did three things.

First, Maine tried to disenfranchise thousands of its own citizens by attempting to remove Donald Trump from the election ballot. (Thankfully, the 9-0 Supreme Court ruling crushed this lame-brained idea).

Next, Maine passed legislation that could potentially disenfranchise all Maine citizens by giving away Maine’s Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate winning the national popular vote. (How would that have worked out this year, seeing as how Donald Trump won the popular vote?)

Finally, I now watch as poetic justice may well play out with Maine’s ranked choice voting scheme. (Remember that in 2018 Bruce Poliquin won his race, but RCV ripped the victory away from him and gave the race to Jared Golden, who, as of this writing, may just lose a race to RCV now?)

Trust me when I say that the rest of the country (even Democrats) laugh at the state of Maine’s various machinations to try to “save” democracy by thwarting democracy.

I’ll still see Maine once a year, but I fear Vacationland is all she’ll ever be.
