I worked with Mark Dion 45 years ago when I was an assistant district attorney and he was with Portland law enforcement. From day one he earned my respect and admiration as a thoughtful and dedicated officer. I supported his run for mayor of Portland.
When he was part of this unanimous City Council vote to divest the city of all companies doing business with Israel, I was horrified and so disappointed in his judgment. I felt it was a decision made with little if no background knowledge and a total disregard for the implications to the Jewish community.
Recently, however, he took the courageous step to publicly admit to making an error in his decision to join that vote and apologized for doing so. It takes a good person to run for public office. It takes a great person to admit when he or she has made a mistake. My thanks to Mark.
