Recently, signs attacking Wes Pelletier, candidate for City Council in District 2, were posted by the “James Phinney Baxter Campaign Fund,” a Republican-aligned PAC. The signs allege that Wes is a “Tech Bro by Day, Struggling Socialist by Night” who makes “$100,000-plus.”
Yes, Wes is a technology worker. By day, he works in a cubicle in a room with four other people, making under $100k a year. Not a “tech bro,” but a guy with a job, like a lot of us, working to make ends meet. Who, yes, spends his free time working to make the world better.
Agree with Wes on the issues, or not, it’s important to recognize that these sorts of negative personal attacks are misguided. It’s hard to imagine that Mayor Baxter, if alive today, would sign off on them.
Ultimately, I hope we can all use this opportunity to refocus on the issues that matter to Portlanders.
