As a child in the 1950s, my religious Republican mother taught me the importance of truth telling by lifting up two presidents, Abraham Lincoln (“Honest Abe”) and George Washington.
In my lifetime, I have never known our democracy to be as much at risk as right now. Lies destroy trust. A healthy democracy is dependent on leaders telling the truth and when they don’t, the lies must immediately be called out. Like many Americans, I have been appalled and exhausted by Donald Trump’s deceit and disinformation.
I keep thinking to myself, what if Trump were elected and there was a “dirty bomb”? Could we ever trust the information from that administration? Our firewalls against disinformation have not held up. Lying has now become a MAGA litmus test.
As Mainers we are better than this. Let’s form a large coalition of Republicans, Democrats and independents in protecting democracy by voting for Kamala Harris.
