A driver is charged with manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol following a head-on collision in Gray on Saturday night that killed a Cumberland man and injured two children.
According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Portland Road (Route 100) at Sugar Maple Road.
Police said Jean Claude Nshimiyimana, 43, of South Portland, was driving a Jeep Gladiator when it crashed into a Chevrolet Suburban traveling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Suburban, 50-year-old Daniel Fackrell of Cumberland, died at the scene, police said in a statement. Two children in the vehicle were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Police said speed and alcohol were likely factors in the crash. Nshimiyimana was being held Sunday in Cumberland County Jail on charges of manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Police said they will not release the juvenile victims’ names at this time.
Portland Road was shut down several hours after the crash, which remains under investigation.
