Thomas Ward Whyte
BAILEY ISLAND – Thomas Ward Whyte, 71, passed away on June 6, 2024, at home on Bailey Island.
It didn’t take much—maybe a friendly hello or a remark on the logo on your hat—and Tom drew you in. He made friends wherever he went and was a loyal one to those he had cultivated over his lifetime. And what a life, full of family, friends, community, and more good times than one could hope for.
Tom was the youngest of six children born to Molly and Dick Whyte on June 29, 1952, in Portland.
He attended Portland schools, where he notably had Miss Moran for kindergarten (this would become important later!) and graduated from Cheverus High School. His family lost Tom’s older sister, Cathy, in 1959 when she was 9 to cancer, a formative experience that stuck with him.
Tom went to St. Anselm’s College where he met some of his greatest friends. After college, Tom joined his father in business, selling life insurance. In 1976, he married Jane DiDonato and settled in Falmouth. They had two kids, Jim and Molly. The family enjoyed the outdoors, being out on the boat, and skiing together. Tom was a rock for the family throughout his life.
Tom’s career evolved into financial planning and he took care of many clients in the Portland area and beyond. He was well-suited to the job, with his natural ability to make connections and build trust. Tom loved his work and was still at it when he passed. He was very involved in the community and served stints on many local boards, including the Portland Club and Maine Medical Center’s Planned Giving Committee.
In 2008, Tom married his kindergarten sweetheart, Cindy Holmes Andrews. The two had always known each other socially, and it turns out they were also in Miss Moran’s kindergarten class together! Tom and Cindy began a new chapter together, buying their home on Bailey Island in 2009. Their life was full of love, boating, concerts, parties, lobster bakes, skiing, and travel. Their favorite trips were with friends and family, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, sailing in the Caribbean, cruising in France, and biking in French Polynesia.
Tom was an avid golfer and a member of the Portland Country Club for the past 50 years. It was a second home, and he could often be found chatting with friends and staff late into the evening after a round of golf, and embellishing stories with a boyish smile.
Tom was the life of the party and made everyone feel welcome. He loved to have fun and made sure you did too. He took care of the people in his life and will be missed by the many lives he touched.
Tom was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Stevie and Billy, and his sister, Cathy.
Tom is survived by his wife, Cindy Andrews; his children, James Whyte (and daughter Liza) and Molly Whyte (and daughter Jaelynn); his former wife, Jane DiDonato; his stepchildren, Kelly Herrmannsdoerfer (Christoph), Erik Andrews (Christine), Mark Andrews (Meredith), and Kristy Harvey (John); his siblings, Rick Whyte and Jane Dolley (Ken); as well as seven step-grandchildren who will miss their beloved “Tito.”
The family will hold a private burial at Calvary Cemetery and a celebration of life will take place at a future date.
