Regarding a recent letter by an engineer in favor of the creation of Pine Tree Power (“Letter to the editor: Mainers deserve power over power grid,” Aug. 28), who stated, “Proponents of keeping our largest utilities private tout the benefits of not having ‘politicians run our grid,’ ” I think it’s probably a hard call to make.
Oftentimes politicians don’t seem to be able to accomplish much with the partisanship going on. On the other hand, a private company is looking for the greatest profit. It could come down to a vote on who we, as Mainers, trust the most.
My opinion is that it might be the best to leave things as they are; existing utilities have the expertise in the energy field. Then try to make sure, through our politicians, that the private companies are held accountable, monitoring for excessive rate increases and ensuring they help customers with issues in a timely way.
