Kit Maloney and Karl Cyr, elected to the North Yarmouth Select Board last week, say they look forward to getting the board back on the right track.
“Residents are looking for a steady and functional select board that listens to all voices, builds consensus and leads with transparency,” Maloney told The Forecaster.
Maloney and Cyr, who endorsed each other in the four-way race for two select board seats, said members need to work better together. Positivity was an important message in their campaign.
Maloney received 631 votes and Cyr 612 in the June 13 election, followed by Paul Whitmarsh with 562 votes and David Reed with 409. Voter turnout was 31%, according to unofficial election results from the town clerk.
The first issue to tackle, Cyr and Maloney said late last week, is to “take back” the proper role of the select board, absent politics. They are committed to finding solutions to problems that fit the needs of a wide range of people in town, they said.
Another issue is long-term budget planning, they said. Residents have concerns about the town’s capital reserve fund and important questions about how tax increment financing, or TIF, funds should be spent, Cyr said.
“We’ll look at which projects should be supported, and which ones should be looked at more closely,” Cyr said. “We’ll also look at plans like building new sidewalks and make sure that gets executed.”
Maloney and Cyr expressed their gratitude to those who came out to vote and said it will be an honor for them to serve on select board.
