PORTLAND – Harriet Lawson Wright gently left this world on May 9, 2023, after 94 years of a rewarding, faithful, busy, meaningful life.
She was born and educated in Falmouth. She made lifelong friendships that she nurtured and sustained, always keeping in touch. She loved traveling, crocheting, a difficult jigsaw puzzle, board games, and playing cards. Relaxing at the beach, enjoying battered fried clams or lobster rolls, with a treat of ginger ice cream was her idea of a perfect day.
An active volunteer for multiple charities, Harriet lent her time and talent, helping many people, especially children. She was a fun, involved, world class “Grammie”.
She considered herself very fortunate to enjoy 35 years of retirement following a 40-year career at the American Can Company. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, celebrating all the Scandinavian customs and holidays.
Christchurch, Portland was an important anchor in Harriet’s life. The friendship and support of her church family was an essential, abiding source of faith, strength, and comfort.
Harriet was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Wright; her beloved daughter, Nora (John) Van Dusen; her six brothers, and a sister.
She is survived by her son, William (Kathleen) Henderson, her stepdaughter, Susan Wright; and the light of her life, her grandson, James Henderson. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends and neighbors who became her dear friends.
Per Harriet’s wishes, there will be a private graveside service. Interment will be in Forest City Cemetery in South Portland.
