Sherman Charles “Sherm” Seaward, 76 years, a resident of Berwick, formerly of Kennebunkport, passed away on April 30, 2023, at Birch Healthcare in Rochester, New Hampshire, after a brief illness.
Sherm was born Oct. 13, 1946, in Biddeford, a son of Raymond E. and Elizabeth (Hubbard) Seaward. During his years at Kennebunk High School, Sherm played basketball, baseball, and football. He received numerous athletic awards, including the Jake Jackson Award for most outstanding male athlete in his graduating class. Sherm would continue in athletics, playing semi-pro baseball for one year in Canada, playing the Twilight Baseball League in Portland, and as guard on several semi-pro basketball teams to include Shields Meats in Kennebunk and as a member of the Griffin Club in South Portland.
In the 1970s, Sherm worked as a custodian for Kennebunk High School and then as a bus driver for the district. Later, he worked for Sandy Mackinnon Landscaping and also for Scott Higgins Painting. For 22 years, Sherm was employed by Webhannet Golf Club as a groundskeeper, where he retired in 2017.
Although he was an avid New England sports fan, nothing could bring Sherm more enjoyment than watching his own grandkids play hockey, baseball, gymnastics, soccer, basketball and track. You might find him at a high school field or in the stands at local colleges.
Sherm was predeceased by his parents. Survivors include his former wife, Patricia O. Seaward; their children, Scott Seaward and his wife, Amanda, of Bellevue, Idaho; David Seaward and his wife, Naomi, of West Kennebunk; Tracy Hall of Albany, New Hampshire; and Russ Seaward and his wife, Kym, of Danvers, Massachusetts. He also survived by his sisters, Claire Seaward of Kennebunk and Jane Ransone of Belle Mead, New Jersey; his nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his long-time partner, Nancy Smith, of Berwick.
A private graveside service will be held at later date. Interment will be at Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.
