Ellery M. Ewald
SCARBOROUGH – Ellery M. Ewald, 85, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022. He was born on March 10, 1937 in Evanston, Ill., the son of Rachel (Bauer) Ewald and Frederick H.G. Ewald.
Ellery attended Northwestern University, graduating in 1960 with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He was employed by Square D. Co., beginning his career as a Sales engineer, retiring as a District Sales Manager. After his training period with Square D., his first office was located in Rochester, NY, later transferring to Cleveland and Akron, Ohio offices and then to Holliston, Mass. He took early retirement and moved to Scarborough.
Ellery met his future wife, Lesley, while both were students at Northwestern University. They were married for 62 years at the time of his death.
He spent over 50 years at their cottage in Pine Point, enjoying time with visiting friends and family as well as time on his sailboat. Ellery loved to travel, talk politics, play tennis and sail.
While he was living for 25 years in Aurora, Ohio, he was active in Kiwanis and the Aurora Community Theater, managing the electrical work for many plays performed at the theater. Ellery was a member of The Church In Aurora and a trustee appointed to the Public Works Department of the Town of Aurora. He was also on the Board of the Aurora Library, a 42⁰ Mason, and a Shriner. In Maine, he served as House Manager of the Portland Club.
Ellery is survived by his wife, Lesley; four sons Jon (Julie) Ewald of South Portland, Mark (Kim) Ewald of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Craig (Carolyn) Ewald of Falmouth, Maine, and Todd (Jeni) Ewald of Dover, Del.; brother Dr. Fred M. Ewald of Weston, Mass., sisters-in-law Holly Bullard and Shelley Dunn, brother-in-law Harry Dunn; grandchildren Trevor, Kate, Alexis, Brooks, Thomas (Mikayla), Rachel and Chase; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022 at the First Congregational Church of Scarborough, 167 Black Point Road in Scarborough. Burial will be private.
