Mary Elizabeth Berry

SOUTH PORTLAND – Mary Elizabeth Berry, 88, of South Portland, died on Sept. 29, 2022 at home with her devoted son, Jeffrey, by her side. Mary was born on June 26, 1934, in Lubec, the daughter of Vincent and Maude (Fleet) McGonigal. She was a 1952 graduate of Lubec High School.

Mary was employed as a bank teller prior to meeting her eventual husband, Dwight Berry, on a blind date set up by mutual friends. Mary and Dwight married on Oct. 11, 1957 in Lubec and eventually moved to South Portland where they raised their three sons. Mary was an avid knitter and participated on bowling leagues for many years.

Mary was known for her infectious smile and wonderful laugh that she shared with everyone. She was very welcoming and known to “adopt” every child her sons brought home. Mary often said that she enjoyed all the neighborhood children playing in her yard because then she knew where her boys were.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dwight; and her sister, Natalie (McGonigal) Scoville.

She is survived by her sons Stephen (Stephanie) of Whitefield, Gregory (Sharon) of Scarborough, Jeffrey (Joan) of South Portland; her sister-in-law, Dorothy (Harlan) Gardner; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Joshua), Kyle (Tracy), Krystle (Zachary), and Nathaniel (Allison); her four great-grandchildren, Madalynn, David, Lauren, and Zayla; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. A private graveside service will follow at a later date. Online condolences may be expressed at http://www.hobbsfuneralhome.com.
