Charlene Morris Whitten
SOUTH PORTLAND – Charlene Roseanne (Morris) Whitten, 79, passed away after a brief illness on July 21, 2022, at Maine Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Born Sept. 10, 1942, in Kingman, Maine, she was the eldest daughter of Donald and Daphine (Pelkey) Morris.
Charlene attended school in Kingman and graduated from Lee Academy in 1960. Looking for adventure, she headed to Portland to attend Westbrook College. She completed her Associate of Science degree in 1962. Her first job took her to Washington, D.C. to work in the coroner’s office which was the start of an extensive career in the medical management field. She returned to Portland to continue her career in medical practice management, medical billing software sales and as a medical biller and coder. After a brief retirement, Charlene returned to the work she enjoyed and continued in the profession until the time of her passing.
Charlene met her husband Jon Michael Whitten at Lee Academy, they were married on the morning of June 27, 1964 at Saint James church in Kingman. Charlene and Jon settled in South Portland and had two children Michael and Julie. Charlene enjoyed attending the many sporting events her children and grandchildren participated in. She loved spending time socializing with family and friends, dancing, was an avid reader, and was always looking for her next game of Scat. Charlene often returned to Lee to enjoy time with family and friends at camp on Silver Lake and Number 3 pond.
Charlene leaves behind her son Michael and wife Lisa Whitten and daughter Julie and husband Tom Fitzherbert; sisters Donna Morris and Connie Hebert; grandchildren Madeline Fitzherbert and Nicholas Reid; several nieces and nephews; and her special friends Gloria and Tricia.
She was predeceased by her husband Jon in 2010; parents Donald and Daphine; and brother Ted Cody.
A celebration of life will be held at the Saltwater Grille in South Portland on August 6 from 3 – 6 p.m.
