BIDDEFORD – After seven years of coming up short of their goal, the Biddeford boys hockey team reached the Class A State Championship two seasons ago.
The Tigers made their second straight championship appearance last year. In the middle of it all? The Journal Tribune’s boys hockey Most Valuable Player, rising junior Nick McSorley.

“It definitely means a lot to receive recognition, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” said McSorley. “They really help, especially my two line mates Trevor Ouellette and Nick Reissfelder.”
McSorley was a huge reason why the Tigers finished with a 12-6 regular-season record this year. As a sophomore, McSorley registered 40 goals and 19 assists. Biddeford scored 82 goals as a team.
The Tigers came up short against the St. Dominic Academy Saints, 4-2, in the state championship, but McSorley was thrilled to see Biddeford return to the final game with such a thin roster.
“Making it to State again was a pretty cool experience,” he said. “We had a good season. We didn’t have a lot of numbers so we had to come together and work hard as a team. We knew we could do it so it was pretty cool … we were able to make it to State.”
McSorley played a vital role in Biddeford’s quest for a title, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist in each of the Tiger’s first two playoff games. The Biddeford fanbase, he said, motivated him to succeed.
“My fans have really supported me,” said McSorley. “They motivate me, and they’ve really helped me a lot.”
The sharpshooter has led Biddeford in scoring each of his first two years. As a freshman, McSorley had 17 goals and 12 assists. He was named the Varsity Maine Boys’ Hockey Player of the Year in March.
Next year, the 2019 Journal Tribune MVP will have another shot at that elusive state championship.
“I’m looking to keep on playing, having fun,” said McSorley. “Hopefully we can win a state championship.”
