HARTFORD, Conn. — The No. 12 University of New England men’s ice hockey team scored twice in the second period to defeat No. 8 Trinity 2-1 in the NCAA Division III Championship First Round on Saturday night at Williams Rink in Hartford.
The Nor’easters advance to next weekend’s quarterfinal round against #4 Norwich.
Ryan Bloom put UNE in front 6:55 into the second period, finishing with a wrap-around on the left side of the net, extending his program-record season total to 23 goals this year. Tyler Seltenreich buried a one-timer from the right circle with 15 seconds left in the period to extend the lead to 2-0 at intermission.
Taggart Corriveau got one back for the Bantams midway through the third, but the Nor’easters defense was able to hold on to advance.
Ben Churchfield was stellar in net tying a season-best with 43 saves on the night. Teddy Loughborough had 28 stops for the Bantams. Brady Fleurent, who is a Biddeford native, assisted on both goals for the Nor’easters.
UNE will take on New England Hockey Conference Champion Norwich in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Kreitzberg Arena in Norwich, Vermont.
