SPRINGVALE — While no one knows exactly what day the small ice disk formed on the Mousam River in Springvale, and was first reported by a passerby on Wednesday, it now seems to have disappeared.
Whether the 4- to 5- foot diameter disk had clung to other ice formations in the river – thus losing its oval shape – or merely melted a bit and broke up before the hard freeze, is unknown.
Matt Toulouse, who had spotted the phenomenon on Wednesday, said he looked again on Thursday and didn’t see it.
The disk was much, much smaller than the disk in Westbrook and one in Baxter State Park and unlike the international famous Westbrook disk, the Springvale one did not spin.
Still, it sparked conversation — and a few photos — and was a brief diversion during the long winter.
“Maybe it brightened someone’s day a little,” said Toulouse.
