HOLLIS — State Rep. Donald Marean has unenrolled from the Republican Party.

Marean is a retired small business owner and lives in Hollis. He is serving his third consecutive term as the representative for House District 16, which covers Hollis and part of Buxton and Saco. He also served in the position from 2004 to 2008.

Marean confirmed in a text message that he had unenrolled on Thursday and did not have any further comment “out of respect” for the House Republicans.

“I will let the fact that I unenrolled speak for itself at this time,” said Marean.

Marean is now listed on the Maine House of Representatives website as an independent.

John Bott, spokesman for the Maine House Republicans, said the speaker’s office announced on Thursday that Marean had unenrolled, but he didn’t have any further information.

“My voting record clearly shows my votes are made for the people and not the party,” Marean said in a campaign questionnaire in October. Marean also stated that compromise and bipartisanship are extremely helpful in moving Maine forward.

In 2018, Marean was part of a bipartisan group of sponsors of a bill establishing the Victim’s Compensation Fund to assist families who have lost loved ones or suffered as a result of violent acts.
