KENNEBUNK — The Kennebunk Police Department, along with the City of Portland Public Health Division’s Overdose Prevention Project, is pleased to announce members of Rotary District 7780 will be trained in “Recognizing and Responding to an Opiate/Heroin Overdose” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15.

The training will be held at York County Community College, Hannaford Lecture Hall, Pratt & Whitney Building, 112 College Drive in Wells.

This training initiative is in response to the opiate epidemic sweeping across our country, where Maine and New Hampshire experienced 901 drug-induced deaths in 2017.

Rotary District 7780’s Recovery Initiative Committee recognizes the need for us to work together as a society to make a difference and help fight this epidemic.  Rotarians and others will be educated on substance use disorder, will learn about stigma and its effects and will be trained in how to recognize the signs of an overdose, how to perform first-aid and how to administer naloxone (the drug which reverses the effects of opioids).

The goal of this training is not only for life-saving purposes, it will hopefully help reduce the stigma attached to those with substance use disorder.

Anyone with questions or requests for additional information is urged to contact Chief Bob MacKenzie at the Kennebunk Police Department or send at email to rmackenzie@kennebunkmaine.us, or call 604-1339.
