LEBANON — A Dover, New Hampshire, motorist faces a felony charge of eluding an officer and a two misdemeanor charges after a short pursuit by Maine State Police on Wednesday evening.
Trooper Benjamin Handzel of Troop A attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Route 202 in Lebanon near the New Hampshire border.
According to state police, the vehicle pulled into a local trailer park and then sped away. A short pursuit ensued, with speeds reaching 65 mph, but the chase was terminated for public safety reason on River Road in Lebanon, police said.
Handzel was able to record the vehicle’s registration and determined the driver of the vehicle was Cory Shaheen, 23, of Dover, New Hampshire. Police said Shaheen does not have a valid driver’s license, and was on probation in Maine in connection with a domestic violence assault.
Later, Handzel received a tip that Shaheen was at the trailer park with his girlfriend and he and Trooper Adam Schmidt with K9 Ibo, also of Troop A, went there. They took Shaheen into custody without incident.
Shaheen was booked at York County Jail on the Class C felony charge of eluding an officer and held without bail in connection with his probation status. Charges of operating with an expired license and criminal speed, both Class E misdemeanors, are pending, police said.
