BIDDEFORD — A new addition has come to Biddeford with the promise of local, quality brands and products.
Owners Danielle O’Neill and Ali Preble, both Maine natives, have come together to create a new company with much to offer to Biddeford and nearby communities.
O’Neill and Preble met while attending Southern Maine Community Center’s culinary program, and decided to embark on a business venture together. Over brunch with friends, they talked about how they wished that there was a local place to meet. Opportunity knocked when they heard from a friend that there would be space available in Biddeford that was being renovated. O’Neill and Preble took the chance and landed their spot on Alfred Street. The space is 1,400 square feet with a hidden gem, a patio behind the building. This business was two years in the making. At first, they aspired to create a provisions store. Thay turned into something more by its opening May 25, 2018.
“It’s a little bit of everything,” said O’Neill. The duo’s aspirations for this company is encompassed in its name, which O’Neill said was picked because of its meaning: being an essential. They hope is that their store will become for some “part of daily routine,” O’Neill said.
While the business already uses many different local products such as produce from Girard Farm in Lyman and Little Spruce Baking Co. for their baked goods. Their selection of local products goes beyond the sandwiches they make, like the popular Turkey Avocado BLT or the Italian. They carry beer, wine, canned goods, bath and body products among other goods that put other local businesses on display. They’ve taken care to select only products that, Preble said, they themselves “actually want to consume.”

O’Neill’s and Preble’s collaborative mission is to really to harness the concept of community. “We are here to support the local community,” O’Neill said. They are passionate about providing quality products that are affordable and giving people the opportunity to access them without having to go far away from their community.
O’Neill and Preble hope to put a bar out on their patio and serve small plate options on weekends in the future. “We want to stick to our original plan,” said O’Neill when asked about expanding. These two want to perfect the little nest they’ve made in their spot in Biddeford. “We’re here for this community,” O’Neill said. She said she and her partner really wanted to form community ties not only with the brands they use and their customers, but also with other local businesses also striving to become fixtures in the area.
“We have room to grow for sure,” Preble said. They want to “keep adding to keep people interested,” said Preble.
