KENNEBUNKPORT — The Town of Kennebunkport has an ordinance requiring dogs to be leashed in certain areas of town.
The Goose Rocks area is included and the following are the specific rules for the beach:
• April 1 to June 14 from 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. dogs must be leashed or under voice/sight control and after 7:30 a.m. a leash is required.
• June 15 to Sept. 30 from 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. dogs must be leashed or under voice/sight control and from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and after 6 p.m. a leash is required. From 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. no dogs are allowed on the beach.
In addition, Piping Plovers, which are protected under the Endangered Species Act, nest on the beach. The Maine Audubon Society, with volunteers, erect and maintain enclosures around the nests. Harassing these birds is a Federal offense. The Kennebunkport Police Department will be again providing extra patrols during the summer season and, along with Animal Control, and will be enforcing the laws.
Dog waste bag dispensers are located at the beach access points and dog owners are expected to use them in order to keep the beach clean and limit pollution.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
