HARTFORD, Conn.
The Hartford Yard Goats (9-9) hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the eighth inning and beat the Portland Sea Dogs (6-11), 4-1, on Tuesday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Park.
Both homers were controversial and led to the ejection of Portland Manager Darren Fenster. Ryan Metzler’s two-run homer did not clear the fence from the video replay, and evidently hit below the yellow line. On the very next pitch, Mylz Jones hit a solo blast down the left-field line, which the Sea Dogs felt was foul.
Teddy Stankiewicz (1-3) suffered the Eastern League loss in relief of Travis Lakins. Stankiewicz pitched five innings on three runs, five hits, four walks and five strikeouts. Lakins dazzled in his season debut, allowing one unearned run over three innings. The righty was activated from the disabled list before the game and allowed four hits, no walks and fanned three.
Portland tied the game in the fifth when its first hit of the game, a Danny Mars single, scored Luke Tendler.
Hartford’s Ryan Castellani worked five innings on one hit, six walks, and five strikeouts. Marc Magliaro pitched a scoreless inning for the win, and Marc Pierpont pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save of the year.
The Sea Dogs have dropped four straight.
