Editor,
I want to thank the hundreds of people and their pooches who came to Gooch’s Beach on Sunday, April 22, 2018, at noon to honor our dear friend Barbara Bush.
We read a few quotes, told funny stories of our encounters with Mrs. Bush both on the beach and in various locations throughout our communities, sang “You Are My Sunshine,” (a fitting tribute on such a gorgeous day), signed an oversized card to be sent to Walker’s Point, threw flowers in the ocean, and donated children’s books to be given to the local libraries and to the children’s wing at the hospitals.
Regardless of one’s politics, we all agreed that she was a special person and deserved our loving tribute. Gooch’s is apolitical … it’s the party of dog lovers!
We believe Barbara would have felt very happy with the outpouring of affection.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
