A bomb threat at Woodside Elementary School in Topsham prompted an evacuation and the rerouting of buses Friday morning.

According to Topsham Police Chief Chris Lewis, the school notified police of the threat at 8:32 a.m. Lewis said a parent reported their child overheard a bomb threat.

About 400 students and staff were taken to Mt. Ararat Middle School. Students stayed at the Orion Performing Arts Center until parents picked them up.

In the meantime, the Maine State Police bomb squad searched the building at Woodside and deemed it safe.

Maine School Administrative District 75 Superintendent Brad Smith said he saw a few children upset by the evacuation. However, he said, “most kids seemed quite content to be with their bus driver and kids they ride to and from school with every day.”

“Once they got to Orion, they organized by class, so teachers were present to interact, reassure and support kids,” Smith added. “All in all, staff and parents I spoke with felt things went incredibly smooth, and were so appreciative of all the adults who pitched in to make things work out.”

The bomb threat came two days after 17 people were killed in a mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and a day after SAD 75 officials and Topsham police investigated two complaints of threats of violence at Mt. Ararat High School.

One complaint was found to have stemmed from a rumor. The other was found to be “a conversation between two boys about an online video game focused on school violence and other comments that suggest one might do something at our school to scare students,” according to MTA High School Principal Donna Brunette.

She said the students were being disciplined, but as of Friday Lewis said their actions didn’t rise to the level of criminal charges. The investigation is ongoing.

The high school was open as usual Friday, though with police posted around the school greeting students and staff.

Some students stayed home, and a press release issued by Smith and Lewis on Friday afternoon stated that “we understand and support parents in making such decisions whenever concerned about safety. Counselors and social workers were available to talk with any concerned students.”

The bomb threat at Woodside Elementary had implications that reached beyond SAD 75. A lockdown occurred at Bath Middle School after a student learned of a possible threat on social media.

Bath police investigated, and “it was determined that the information received was not a threat to BMS at all,” according to information posted on the Regional School Unit 1 website. “Rather, it was related to the concerns at Mt. Ararat that were reported yesterday and found to be inaccurate.”
