Editor,
I write in praise of the staff of the Newton Center at Southern Maine Health Center, in Sanford, Maine.
My sister, Claire Goldberg became a long-term care resident there last April. She died recently after receiving loving care during her stay. Much of this care was provided in extraordinary circumstances as seventeen years ago Claire suffered a brain injury which at times made her a very difficult and challenging person.
I had always thought that going to a long-term care [or nursing home] facility would be the cruelest thing that can happen to your elderly and/or disabled loved ones, and I now realize that Claire could not have received better care or been part of a kinder community.
The Sanford community has a great asset in this facility. I am so thankful to the staff for the excellent care my sister received.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
