Artists at Work
What is art but the desire to create, and the yearning to communicate to the world the best that is within us? Developing it and using it for the glory of God can be an act of worship. When I enter the church parking lot after a snowstorm it takes my breath away. The snow covered trees form an arch and it is like entering an amphitheater where the broad sweeps of a fellow parishioner’s plow have sculpted a vast open space. It is a work of art. When I see others coming through the doors of the church with polishing cloths or paint brushes in hand I know that something special is going to unfold. All art does not reside in galleries or museums. We are surrounded by it every day. There is artistry in a beautifully dressed altar, a well-crafted sermon, and in the joyfulness of the music. All that we do comes from somewhere deep inside of us and it is our gift to God. God created the world and all that is in it. He then formed human beings in his own image, and as bearers of that image we, too, are creators, and through us God continues to design and develop his marvelous creation.
