But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” Matthew 19:14

Children’s Day

When I was growing up in the Baptist church, one Sunday in June was always celebrated as Children’s Day, a day when the children of the parish were recognized. We each had a little piece to memorize and recite before the congregation. This was followed by a little group singing. Then we would each receive a small flowering plant which we were to take home to water and care for throughout the summer months. Caring for this little plant was a reminder of how God cares for each and every one of us. A child is a precious gift from God. We are to love and cherish them, care for them, nurture them, do our best to keep them safe from harm, and guide them along the right pathways in their journey toward adulthood, remembering all the while that we do not own them. God has given each of them special gifts and talents, and they belong to him. We are their caretakers. Our job is to see them through the eyes of God, to help them become who God wants them to be, and send them out into the world with our blessing.
