OLD ORCHARD BEACH — In 2019, the Town Council rate of pay will increase for the first time in decades.
The Town Council is comprised of five members, including a chairman who has a vote on the council. The current annual stipend for town councilors is $1,200 for the chairman and $1,000 for the other four.
This rate of pay was approved by the Town Council in 1995, according to information from the town.
The Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to increase the annual stipend, effective Nov. 18, 2019. At that time, the annual stipend will increase to $2,500 for the Town Council chairman and to $2,000 for the other four councilors.
Councilor Shawn O’Neill explained the council chose to delay the increase in 2019 so it would not go into effect during the current term of anyone sitting on the council at this time, so they would not be giving themselves a raise.
