Wells residents are encouraged to vote “Yes” on Warrant Article No. 15 in order to approve purchasing the Getchell Pasture, an undeveloped parcel of more than 120 acres in western Wells.  Money for the project has already been raised and stored in the town’s Land Bank Account so purchase does not add any new taxes.

As the town continues to develop rapidly, it is important to acquire undeveloped public land. This parcel offers multiple opportunities for recreation, including hiking, birding, berrying, snowmobiling, skiing, nowshoeing, and  photography. Recreation potential is especially high because the land  connects with the town’s Perkinstown Wildlife Commons via two corridors: the CMP powerline and the Unitel pipeline (site of the future Eastern Hiking Trail).

The land also presents some of the highest biodiversity in town, offering habitat for moose and deer, songbirds and raptors, and many other kinds of wildlife, including the rare New England Cottontail.

The town’s Conservation Commission strongly recommends purchase, and both the Select Board and the Budget Board recommend purchase with no dissenting voices. Please remember to vote on June 13 in favor of acquiring the Getchell Pasture for Town of Wells Conservation Land.

Sincerely,
