The Freeport Interact groups are springing into action with activities supported by the Freeport Rotary Club. The Freeport Middle School Interact Club includes 20 students and the Freeport High School Interact Club has 40 students. Lucy Lloyd, a Freeport Rotarian, is the liaison for the Interact Clubs.

 
 
The FMS Interact students visited the Statehouse in Augusta on Maine Citizen’s Action Day, April 4. One student said, “It was so exciting to be acknowledged by the entire legislature.” The FMS Interact Club received a grant from Eco Maine to conduct ongoing education about recycling initiatives in Freeport. Students hosted a “Green Day” at the Freeport Middle School on March 17 and are coordinating a poster contest on the plastic bag ban, reminding residents and tourists to take their reusable bags when shopping in town.

The FHS Interact students also attended Maine Citizen’s Action Day and participated in the 2017 Interact Generations Conference on March 25 at Scarborough High School. The FHS students were moved by the keynote speaker,

Center and raised $300 to support the Kakamega Orphan Project Women’s Farming Initiative in Kenya. And they will host a Charity Walk to benefit the National Alliance to End Homelessness in the coming week and coordinate recycling at the high school.

Students will also assist with the Freeport Rotary Club’s 22nd Annual Close to the Coast 5K and 10K Road Races scheduled for Saturday, June 17, at Winslow Park in Freeport. Individuals can register for the race online at www.close2coastrace.com or on the day of the race. All proceeds from the race go to student scholarships. Over the past 20 years, the club has donated more than $100,000 in scholarships for college-bound students.

The Freeport Rotary Club, formed in 1983, is a diverse group of more than 35 business and professional people from the Freeport, Durham, and Pownal area. Its mission is to provide service to those in need, locally and around the world. Interested residents are always welcome to join the weekly meetings at Freeport Community Services on Depot Street in Freeport. The club meets at 7 a.m. Wednesdays.
