SANFORD — Folks with early stage Alzheimer’s Disease, other forms of dementia or memory challenges can, along with their caregivers, take part in a free fitness program starting next month at Trafton Senior Center.
Mindful Mobility Sanford is a fitness program presented by the YMCA of Sanford-Springvale in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter’s Early-Stage Social Programs. This free program features eight, one-hour weekly class sessions led by trained fitness instructors.
The exercises focus on gentle stretching, mobility, balance and strength training. The content was developed by former wellness director at the YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston Becky Walker.
The goal of the classes is to enhance the physical, cognitive and social capacity of each participant, said Sanford Springvale YMCA senior program director Merilee Perkins. “This program aligns perfectly with direction of the Y movement to address chronic disease management and chronic disease prevention. It would be wonderful to see a new social community emerge from the program.”
“Motivation for this program is based on an increasing body of research indicating that fitness can be highly beneficial for those living with dementia,” notes Laurie Trenholm, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter. “This initiative is actually part of a larger effort in which we are partnering with community organizations to take their own approaches to serving local citizens living with dementia.”
The Alzheimer’s Association’s early-stage social programs are specifically designed for those diagnosed with dementia and their care partners. The programming offers meaningful activity in friendly, supportive environments. Screening may be required to determine if the program is appropriate for potential participants. Early registration is highly recommended as space is limited.
There will be a Mindful Mobility information session on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Trafton Senior Center, 19 Elm St. in Sanford. The eight-week series runs from Wednesday, April 19 to Wednesday, June 7.
