SANFORD — That Christmas tree that graced your living room — you know, the one the cat or dug knocked over a couple of times — is very likely looking a bit worse for wear right now.
If you live in Sanford or Springvale village, there’s a remedy for that.
Sanford Public Works and the Parks and Recreation Department are teaming up to transform discarded Christmas trees into mulch for the city’s trails.
Folks can put their natural Christmas trees out for pick up starting January 3. They’ll be picked up by DPW from Jan. 3-13, said Public Works Director Matt Hill and should be put out on the homeowner’s regular trash day — even though they may not be picked up on that exact day.
Hill advised that the trees should be left whole, and as close to the curb as possible. All decorations must be removed.
Folks who don’t want to wait for pick-up may take their tree to the transfer station debris area 7;30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The transfer station will be closed Jan. 3 due to the holiday schedule.
