“Their arms are as long as our bodies,” shouted Lisbon coach Julie Petrie after a turnover against Boothbay in a girls high school basketball contest on Tuesday.

The Seahawks, the defending Class C South regional champions, showed their length while pulling away from the Greyhounds for a 51- 26 Mountain Valley Conference victory.

Boothbay appears to be a team to beat again this season, with a 5-0 record after Tuesday, while Lisbon dropped to 2- 2 after playing a solid first half before the Seahawks wore the Greyhounds down in the second.

“ I was hoping for a quarter and we stayed for half,” said Petrie, whose Greyhounds trailed 24-17 at the break. “ We had nothing to lose. We will get better as the season goes on. We just have to limit mistakes.”

Boothbay’s defensive presence caused Lisbon to only attempt 36 shots in the contest, and the Seahawks out-rebounded the ‘ Hounds 26- 21 and forced 25 Lisbon turnovers.

“ We focused on our 12 pressure and defense in the second half, and I think the difference is that we attacked the glass and played aggressive,” said Boothbay forward Page Brown, who led the Seahawks with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

“ It is difficult to play them,” said Lisbon forward Kaylin Le, who finished with five points and five rebounds. “They have really long arms and it is hard to get past them. In the first half, we pushed through and played strong. Our offense worked. We were strong in the first half.”

Hanging in

Boothbay led 4- 0 and had already pulled down six offensive boards and forced three Lisbon miscues.

“ We practice offensive rebounding a ton, and it is important for us to be solid on the boards,” said Brown.

But, Le swished a 3- pointer to get the Greyhounds on the board and put back her own miss to draw Lisbon to 6-5.

The Seahawks used a 6- 0 spurt to claim a 12- 5 edge and led 12-7 through eight minutes behind six points each from Brown and Faith Blethen, who picked up two fouls.

Blethen went to the bench with her third foul midway through the second quarter, and freshman Giana Russo came off the Lisbon bench to score four points as the Greyhounds went to the half trailing by just seven.

“We got a little excited, anxious,” said Petrie. “ I was excited because we played two brand new defenses and stuck to the plan. They worked hard. We are really nitty gritty and held them.”

“ We have a target on our backs, and we work on the little things knowing teams will throw several different defenses at us,” said Brown, who had 10 points at the intermission along with Blethen.

Brown took over in the third quarter, scoring 13 points and pulling down four boards as Boothbay extended its lead to 39-21.

“ They eat you alive. They are big, huge. They are all 6- footers,” said Petrie.

Boothbay kept coming early in the fourth quarter, with Brown’s hoop and harm making it a 45- 21 contest with 5: 21 remaining.

Russo tried to keep her team in it, scoring five quick points off a pair of steals to make for a 45-26 game.

Brown finished off her big game with a free throw, and Blethen, who had 17 points and seven steals, scored her final points off a steal to cap the Seahawk’s fifth straight win.

The Greyhounds will look to get back to their winning ways at Dirigo on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Lisbon shot 33 percent (12-of-36). Russo led with nine points and four steals, while Jasmin Le and Ali Sult each pulled down five boards.
