KENNEBUNK—The Kennebunk Free Library is once again the recipient of a grant, sponsored by the Camden Conference, in cooperation with the World Affairs Council, to bring highly qualified speakers to present to the community.
In addition, the library also is offering passive programming, a book discussion and has added several new titles to its collection about this current, dynamic topic.
At noon on Thursday, Jan, 19, a book discussion will be held at the library about “The Sympathizer” by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The library will have copies of this 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction available to check-out on a first-come, first-serve basis. All are welcome to join.
John D. Doughty will present on Feb. 7 (snow date Feb. 27) at 6 p.m.
His presentation is about “Global Migration and Refugees: Why People Migrate, the Economics and Security Implications of Immigration and the Current Refugee Crisis, and What Lies Ahead.”
Dr. Barry Costa Pierce, Chair of the Department of Marine Sciences and Director of the Marine Science Center at the University of New England, will present on March 1 (snow date March 6) at 6 p.m. His
presentation is about the UNE Marine Sciences Developing New Trans-Atlantic Ocean Foods Entrepreneurship through International Scientific and Educational Cooperation.
The library asks that visitors also stop by throughout January to contribute to its ancestry map to see where our families have migrated from over the years. Visitors will also have the opportunity to color in their
personal migrations and to make a journal entry about their history.
The Camden Conference is a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to foster informed discourse on world issues. This year’s conference, Refugees and Global Migration: Humanity’s Crisis, will be held Feb. 17 to 19, 2017.

Comments are not available on this story. Read more about why we allow commenting on some stories and not on others.
We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
You can read more here about our commenting policy and terms of use. More information is also found on our FAQs.
