SACO — The Saco Police Department is warning residents of a recent phone scam involving someone claiming to be a firefighter calling about a smoke alarm program.
In a Facebook post Friday evening, the department said it has received reports from residents receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be with the Saco Fire Department.
The caller claims to be calling about a smoke alarm program, and the caller ID reads the call is from the Saco Fire Department.
“This is a scam and whoever the caller is, he does not represent or work for the Saco Fire Department,” said police in the posting. “If you receive a call from them, hang up immediately and notify the Saco Police Department.”
According to the Federal Trade Commission, scammers can use caller ID to make it look like anyone, including a government office or business, is calling. The FTC advises to hang up if a caller asks for money or financial account numbers.
If you think the call is legitimate, call a number you know to be genuine, not the number the caller gave you, according to the FTC.
“Before you give up money or information, talk to someone you trust,” advises the FTC on its website. “Scammers want you to make decisions in a hurry. Slow down, check out the story, search online – or just tell a friend. We find that people who talk to someone – anyone – are much less likely to fall for a scam.”
