Whether or not you supported Question 2 this year, it appears it will go into law.
I’m writing this letter to make sure that people understand that sometimes tax revenue is directed into a “general fund.” This happens at all levels of government and is very common.
The reason I raise this is that that they money in a general fund can essentially be used for anything that those responsible for the budget choose. For instance, even though this tax is intended to fund education it would be entirely possible for it to be redirected to solar subsidies or any other program.
Take action if you want to make sure this money is allocated to support education in Maine. Reach out to your state representative and state senator and urge them to be a champion for using this money as intended.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
