WINDHAM—The 38-year-old Steep Falls woman who died in a head on or nearly head-on pick-up truck crash on Tanberg Trail last week is being remembered as a devoted mother of three who was married to her high school sweetheart for 21 years.

Rebecca Perry, who was driving, died at the scene of the Dec. 1 crash near the Standish line. A 15-year-old female passenger in her pick-up was transported to Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Two other people in the other pick-up truck sufferedminor injuries.

As of Monday, Dec. 5, the teen passenger’s condition was serious but improving, according to Windham Police Chief Kevin Schofield. The driver of the other truck an his passenger received minor injuries.

Perry, who was married to Justin Perry, had two sisters and several nieces and nephews, her obituary said.

“She meant so much to so many people and her dedication, love, compassion and forgiveness will live on in all those who had the pleasure to cross her path,” it said.

Windham police officers responded to the scene about 11 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11. Two full-sized pickup trucks were involved in the crash, which police say was either head-on or nearly head-on.

The driver of the second truck, Philip Macri, 28, of Hiram, was transported to Maine Med with relatively minor injuries, police say. A passenger in Macri’s truck, Kelly Brangan, 23, of Englishtown, New Jersey, was also transported to Maine Med with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

While other town’s police departments may turn a fatal crash over to the Maine State Police for investigation, Schofield said his department is equipped to handle such cases on its own, thanks to two officers who are trained in crash reconstruction and investigation.

“It’s not uncommon for us to step out and help other towns and other counties” in investigating crashes, Schofield said.

The two Windham officers trained in crash reconstruction are Detective Eugene Gallant and Patrolman Jason Burke.

Schofield said he does not have a timeline of when investigation into the Dec. 1 fatality will be wrapped up, or whether any charges will be brought against those involved.

Between waiting for laboratory tests, meeting with prosecutors and writing reports, “it’s a long process,” he said.

The accident closed Tandberg Trail for approximately six hours. It was the second fatal accident in Windham in two weeks, following a hit-and-run Nov. 16 on Anderson Road that claimed the life of 26-year-old cyclist Brandon Dumond.

Devin Brown, 33, of Scarborough, has pleaded not guilty to charges brought against him in connection with the hit-and-run. He was charged with aggravated OUI, aggravated assault and failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death.
