FALMOUTH (AP) — State traffic engineers are looking into an increase in crashes on Interstate 295 between Falmouth and Gardiner.
The Portland Press Herald reports there were more than 350 crashes on that stretch of highway last year. That’s 32 percent higher than in 2013, and about 25 percent higher than the average number of crashes from 2006 to 2013.
The speed limit was increased to 70 mph on some sections of I-295 in June 2014.
State traffic engineers met on Wednesday to analyze data, including driver behavior, increased traffic volume, time of crashes and gas price changes.
State transportation officials say they plan to release a report on short- and possibly long-term solutions that can help ease traffic flow while keeping the interstate safe and efficient.
