YARMOUTH
The Mt. Ararat/Morse High School girls ice hockey team fell behind early en route to an 8-1 setback against Yarmouth/Freeport/Gray- New Gloucester on Tuesday night.
Katie Clemmer led the way for the Clippers (1-1), scoring a hat trick and notching one assist. Isabelle King blocked 10 of the 11 shots she faced in net.
Eagles (0-2) goalie Lily Schenk faced a whopping 40 shots, stopping 32 of them.
The Clippers jumped on top 4-1 in the opening period. Clemmer scored 1:15 into the game off an assist from Caroline Grant, and Grant tallied unassisted three minutes later for a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles cut the deficit in half at the nine-minute mark when Isabele Burch found the back of the net.
However, Molly Wilson and Sophie Newberg scored less than one minute apart late in the frame, and Clemmer completed her hat trick with pair of second-period goals for a 6-1 advantage.
In the third period, Yarmouth/Freeport/Gray- New Gloucester tacked on two more goals — Freeport’s Paige Rinaldi and Grant — to close the 8-1 Clippers victory.
Mt. Ararat/Morse visits York/Traip Academy on Thursday at 6 p.m., while the Clippers hit the road for the first time against Scarborough on Saturday at 1:40 p.m. in Lewiston.
