Today is the last day students, parents, staff and alumni of Regional School Unit 5 can complete an online survey whose information will help school leaders plan the RSU’s academic future and goals.
Renaming Freeport High School is one survey question, said School Superintendent Becky Foley.
“The proponents of the name change believe that a change in the name could create a more inclusive feel for students and parents from Durham and Pownal,” Foley wrote in an email.
Participation from parents, residents who may not now have a child in the school system, middle school students in RSU 5, Freeport High School students and staff, graduates of Freeport High School and RSU 5 staff members is encouraged.
The online survey can be accessed through RSU 5’s website. Each participant must enter their name to start the survey yet all information will remain confidential. Information gleaned from the survey will be sorted out and studied by school board members. No board member will know the name of a survey respondent.
Survey participants also may give input about what academic programming they would like to see expanded in the district, including universal Pre-K, classes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), dual enrollment, and classes in science, technology, engineering, English language arts and mathematics, (STEAM).
Six schools comprise RSU 5: Durham Community School; Pownal Community School; Mast Landing and Morse Street elementary schools in Freeport; Freeport Middle School; and Freeport High School.
As of Oct. 1, 1,890 students in prekindergarten through Grade 12 were enrolled in RSU 5. School districts traditionally determine the school year’s enrollment rate on that date, adjusting for new student enrollment and transfers to other districts.
One success of RSU 5 students is that they graduate in high numbers. Most recently, said Foley, 98 percent of students graduated from the high school.
“We are also seeking input on whether the district does a good job of celebrating its achievements and whether it is offering programs that help RSU5 to distinguish itself from other districts,” said Foley.
