Biddeford is fortunate to have many assets. Among those assets are some of the greatest women and men protecting our community every day. I am writing to show support for our first responders.
I believe we must reduce property taxes, but I don’t believe the compensation of our first responders is the path to do so. We should be bold to ensure we’re able to attract and retain the best people to work for our Police and Fire Departments.
We’ve done the work to attract great people, let’s keep them. It’s both morally right and a good investment. Finalizing contract negotiations with the Fire Department and proactively adjusting the contract with the Police Department would make every other dollar we spend more effective.
Employers would be more likely to come here, families would be more likely to stay here and our real estate would increase in value

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
