
According to Steve McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department, the crash took place about 4 p.m. and involved a collision between a passenger car and a tractor trailer truck in the northbound lanes of the turnpike near mile marker 22.
Traffic was backed up for miles as emergency reacue teams worked the accident scene, McCausland said.
Rush hour traffic headed north was being diverted onto U.S. Route 1.
Investigators are still at the accident scene and tgrying to detemine what caused the fatal crash.
