The Ironman Maine triathlon will take place on Sunday, Aug. 27, beginning with a 1.2-mile swim in the ocean. Participants will then ride a 56-mile bike course that winds through Saco, Dayton, Lyman, Waterboro, Hollis, and Old Orchard Beach and then run a 13.1 mile course that includes part of the Eastern Trail.
The Ironman triathlon will take the place of the Revolution 3, or Rev3, triathlon that has been held in town annually in late August since 2012.
Ironman is partnering with REV3 to produce the race in August under the Ironman name.
“Our entire team is excited about the opportunity to bring one of the largest sporting events to Old Orchard Beach” said REV3 owner and founder Charlie Patten in a written statement.
The Ironman proposal was well received by the town council at a workshop earlier this month, with councilor Joseph Thornton stating that he “couldn’t be more excited” about the Ironman race coming to town.
The town council gave unanimous approval, with council chairman Shawn O’Neill absent, to a permit for the race for the next three years.
