“It feels really good. I never thought that I could. I used to play forward and then I got moved to the back. [Head coach Paula Doughty] put me in as a mid. Then I scored and it feels really good. It really took a team effort to do this.” said Salley, a sophomore.
Skowhegan took an early lead when Maliea Kelso scored with 16 minutes remaining in the first half. Massabesic defense and captain Josie Ring put up a tough barrier to the Indians offense, working well with forward Emma Rutlege to shift sides.
Massabesic marked up well and demonstrated smooth play execution even when playing defense to the Indians intense offense Julia Steves.
The score stood 1-0 through most of the second half, until Massabesic matched with seven minutes left. Massabesic head coach Michele Martin-Moore said, “I called a time out and I asked them, ‘do you believe in yourselves? Let’s go, we can do this. And they tied it up and we came in under 2 minutes just to get us into the overtime. We’re pretty good in the overtime.”
Jacklyn Bearse made that decisive goal for the Mustangs, putting them in sight of overtime play until the last two minutes when Salley scored to bring Skowhegan the win.
