From the Journal Tribune: “Gusty winds battered Maine on Sunday in the aftermath of a wild weekend rainstorm, toppling a 165-foot crane in one of Portland’s most populous neighborhoods and triggering additional power outages around the state. The crane was blown into three houses near the construction site at Maine Medical Center, with the wrecking ball narrowly missing a car that was headed to the hospital’s emergency room.”

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D. Mass. will campaign in Lewiston and Biddeford for Maine Democratic candidates on Thursday, according to an announcement today from Secretary of State Kenneth M. Curtis, Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Peter N. Kyros, Congressional candidate from the First District. Sen. Edmund S. Muskie of Maine will accompany Kennedy to the two cities.”

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “A Chinese opium den and gambling house, believed to be one of the chain extending throughout New England under control of a single syndicate, was uncloaked in Portland Monday evening when after hours of watchful waiting federal officers and police raided the dwelling house at 15 Portland Street and there gathered up a quantity of opium, a smoking outfit, gambling paraphernalia and seven Chinamen.”
