From the Journal Tribune: “Ten rural towns in central and western York County have taken a formal opposition against the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, the referendum question voters state-wide will decide Nov. 7. Nine of the towns (Acton, Alfred, Buxton, Limerick, Lyman, Shapleigh, Hollis, Newfield and Parsonfield) are members of the 11-Town Group. The 10th is Lebanon.”

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “A needless run was made this morning by Biddeford firefighters to 163 Cleaves St., Biddeford. A telephone call reported someone smelled smoke in the three story wooden tenement owned by Louie Pepin. Occupant of the flat where firefighters investigated is Raymond Chaloult.”

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “Following the departure of the Norwegian steamer Avona for Rotterdam with a cargo of 143,000 bushels of wheat for the Belgian relief commission, there is likely not to be any further shipment of grain from Portland for another week. There have been several steamers reported leaving the other side within the past three weeks for Portland, but doubt is expressed as to whether some of them are really coming.”
