From the Journal Tribune: “The Maine State Chamber of Commerce announced its opposition to the Taxpayers Bill of Rights referendum proposal Wednesday, calling the citizen initiative too broad and suggesting that better ways could be found to offer tax relief, control the growth of government and stimulate the economy.”

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Biddeford firefighters were dispatched to Mai Street, Biddeford Pool, this morning to aid the Biddeford Pool volunteer fire department, which quelled a couch blaze in a three story wooden apartment building. Careless smoking was listed as the cause of the blaze. The building is owned by Mrs. John Oddy and the apartment is occupied by Fred Estes.”

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “The formal opening of the Waterville Country club took place Wednesday and over 1,000, including members and invited guests, were present at the opening festivities. In the afternoon there was an informal reception at the club house, while on the golf course, several expert golfers demonstrated their skill at wielding the club.”
